Events and Initiatives:

Crysalis - Home for Victims of Domestic Abuse:

Project 1: Mother's Day Baskets

For our very first collaborative effort with Crysalis, the Social Awareness Club along with teachers from Atkinson Middle School collected donations and gifts in order to create Mother's Day baskets for the beautiful women of the Phoenix and Scottsdale locations.  The women were very surprised and grateful.  Words can hardly describe the reaction of the women as we met them on our second project.

Project 2: End of year celebration and Volunteering

In celebration of all of the accomplishments of the students that have participated in the Social Awareness Club events and volunteering opportunities and in association with Crysalis, we were able to have our end of year BBQ with the women, children, and staff of this great organization.  We also took this opportunity to work with the children and women of the shelter in creating arts and crafts.  In the end, we made great friends and had even better BBQ.

Team Astros / Social Awareness Club        Family Night:

Team Astros and the Social Awareness Club put together a Family night that included activities such as Bingo, a kids movie, and student awards for academic and community achievement.  The turn-out was great and the premier of the documentary went over well with parents and students alike.

NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Illness):

March 29th - Phoenix

The walk was amazing!  There were people in the thousands and the Social Awareness Club was proud to be represented by fine students and parents!  The walk was for mental illness advocacy.

The Quilt Initiative (December 07 - April 08):

The club is designing and constructing a quilt that will be sold online.  The quilt consists of squares that were created by club members during our after school program.  All of the quilt squares have drawings, quotes, poems, etc with a positive message on them.  All of the proceeds will be donated to local, national, and/or international causes.

Crocheting for Hope (February - July 08):

During our after school program and in our spare time, we are crocheting blankets and scarves in many different colors to represent our commitment to understanding and accepting diversity of all forms.  All blankets and scarves will be sold online.  The proceeds will benefit needy students and families within our school and in the community.

Graffiti Busting:

Saturday, February 23rd

Saturday, March 1st

The Social Awareness Club has again teamed up with the IMPACT program to paint over graffiti in the neighborhood surrounding the school.  Graffiti is a huge problem in this area and the club looks forward to making our surrounding area look beautiful once again.  This project is slotted for the late part of February and early part of March and we are looking at bringing 40 or more students over the course of two weekends.  Approval is pending on being able to have graffiti busting monthly.

UPDATE: During the course of two weekends, the Social Awareness Club and IMPACT program were able to get nearly 90 students to participate in graffiti busting!

Mural Painting (Ongoing 07-08 Academic Year):

Along with the IMPACT program, we will be painting murals around the school and community.

We recently completed working on a school themed mural to be placed in the school gym.  This mural allowed students the opportunity to develop the skills needed in order to paint later murals.

November 20th - Turkey Day Dance:

Proceeds from the dance went to needy families during the holiday season.  The money was used to buy numerous items that made two lucky families unbelievably happy during the holidays.  It was an emotional experience that none involved will ever forget...
